Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement

The Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA) fulfills a critical requirement of the Cures Act. ONC received more than 100 comments during the public comment period from a wide range of stakeholders.

Information Blocking

Information blocking is a practice by a healthcare “actor” except as required by law or specified in an information blocking exception, that is likely to interfere with the access, exchange, or use of electronic health information.

Interoperability 2030

In May 2021, ONC launched Health Interoperability Outcomes 2030 to engage the public and seek out aspirational, achievable, and measurable “Interoperability Outcome Statements” for 2030. ONC received over 700 submissions during the public comment period.

Advancing Interoperability with Medicaid

CMS, in coordination with ONC, has created a series of toolkits and resources for Medicaid (Health Home State Plan Amendment, 1115 Demonstrations, and programs that advance Home and Community Based Services) that are focused on health information exchange, health IT, and interoperability.

Health IT Certification Program

The ONC Health IT Certification Program is a voluntary program that helps ensure that current and future technologies are developed with interoperability in mind. A list of certified health IT is maintained through the Certified Health IT Products List.
